When to Prune Trees in Gauteng

Most of the trees in Kempton Park gardens are best pruned in late winter, roughly July to the end of August. The tree is dormant, the leaves are off, and you can see the structure clearly. Cuts made now heal quickly once the spring growth starts.

Why late winter works

Sap is low, insects are less active and there is less chance of fungal infection getting into fresh cuts. It is also easier for us to spot dead wood and crossing branches when the canopy is bare.

The exceptions

Jacarandas are best left until after they flower. Fruit trees have their own timing depending on the type. Dead or dangerous branches should come off at any time of year, because waiting for the right season is not worth a branch through the roof.

What a good prune looks like

Cuts are made just outside the branch collar, never flush with the trunk and never leaving long stubs. We avoid topping, which leaves ugly knuckles and a mass of weak regrowth. The goal is a tree that looks natural, only lighter and safer.
