When we chip branches on site, many clients ask us to leave a load behind. It is one of the easiest ways to improve a Gauteng garden through a dry winter and a hot summer.
What mulch does
A layer of wood chips holds moisture in the soil, keeps roots cooler and smothers weeds. As it breaks down it feeds the soil with organic matter.
How to use it
Spread it 5 to 8 centimetres thick over beds and around trees. Keep it a hand's width away from tree trunks and plant stems so they do not rot. Top it up once a year.
Fresh or aged?
Fresh chips are fine on paths and around established trees. For vegetable beds, let them age for a few months first so they do not borrow nitrogen from the soil.
